Okay - so I was reading some census bureau factoids the other day about how bad "poor" people in America have it. Here are some facts that may be of interest:
46% of poor households own their own home -and the average size is 3 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms
The average "rooms per person" ratio for poor households is 2.0.
The average poor American had more square feet of living space than a middle class person living in London, Paris, Vienna or Athens.
76% of poor households have air conditioning - 30 years ago only 36% of the entire US population had air conditioning.
75% of poor households own a car. 30% own two cars or more.
97% have color TV, 63% have cable or satellite, nearly 80% have a DVR
89% report having "enough" food to eat, and poor children actually eat MORE meat than middle class kids.
And given all this - 50% of Americans don't pay ANY income tax. At all.
So if we want to attack the deficit, wouldn't it then make sense NOT to increase taxes on wealthy people (I won't even go into to how little you have to have for the gov't to say you are "wealthy"!) and use them to create jobs for the "poor" - and then tax all away at those that don't pay anything currently?
I mean - it just makes numerical sense irregardless of your belief systems.
It would seem that CCR got it wrong when they wrote:
Some folks are born, silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don't they help themselves,
But when the taxman comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale...
It would seem that the "poor" have mastered the art of the rummage sale.
